Close to the end point of the river Maas near Maastricht, a small island has been constructed recently as a natural reserve. Further down the stream, the only natural beach of Rotterdam is now completely surrounded by the industrial harbor. Although humans mostly abandon these places, the human traces, however, remain: an astonishing variety of garbage carried by the river gathers on the shores. There in the mud, one can find pieces of bones and of plastic side by side, ageing similarly, almost as though they belonged together. Arranged in fictional cities and skeletons, this cyborg matter constructs the image of a time after ours. The earth carries on its cycles of transformation without us.

Près de l’embouchure de la Meuse, à proximité de Maastricht, une petite île a récemment été aménagée comme réserve naturelle. Plus en aval, la seule plage naturelle de Rotterdam est aujourd’hui entièrement entourée par le port industriel. Bien que les humains abandonnent ces lieux en grande partie, leurs traces demeurent : une étonnante variété de déchets transportés par la rivière s’accumule sur les rives. Là, dans la boue, on peut trouver des fragments d’os et de plastique côte à côte, vieillissant de manière similaire, presque comme s’ils appartenaient au même monde. Disposée en villes fictives et en squelettes, cette matière cyborg construit l’image d’un temps qui viendrait après le nôtre. La terre poursuit ses cycles de transformation sans nous.

Dicht bij het eindpunt van de rivier de Maas, nabij Maastricht, is onlangs een klein eiland aangelegd als natuurreservaat. Verder stroomafwaarts wordt het enige natuurlijke strand van Rotterdam tegenwoordig volledig omringd door de industriële haven. Hoewel mensen deze plekken grotendeels verlaten, blijven hun sporen bestaan: een verbazingwekkende verscheidenheid aan afval dat door de rivier wordt meegevoerd, verzamelt zich op de oevers. Daar, in de modder, liggen stukjes bot en plastic naast elkaar, die op een vergelijkbare manier verouderen, bijna alsof ze bij elkaar horen. Gerangschikt als fictieve steden en skeletten vormt deze cyborgmaterie het beeld van een tijd na de onze. De aarde zet haar cycli van transformatie voort zonder ons.
